IoT Application Performance and Cost Efficiency for a Leading Home Appliance Brand

IoT Application Performance and Cost Efficiency for a Leading Home Appliance Brand

Case Overview

A home appliance company partnered with us to enhance the performance of their IoT-based application and optimize the use of AWS Timestream database. By establishing a robust performance engineering framework and conducting in-depth testing, we were able to identify bottlenecks and deliver substantial improvements in both response times and cost efficiency.

ABOUT THE CLIENT

The client, a prominent player in the home appliance industry, has been with us since 2018. They are based in the USA and required performance engineering services to optimize their IoT application and associated cloud infrastructure.

BUSINESS CHALLENGE

The client faced several performance challenges, including high response times, costly database queries, and system bottlenecks in their IoT-based application. They needed a solution to baseline their system’s performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize their cloud infrastructure for better scalability and cost efficiency.

SOLUTION OVERVIEW

We began by establishing a comprehensive performance engineering framework to evaluate and certify the performance of the web, application (microservices), and AWS components in the QA environment. We executed volume testing using the JMeter tool, focusing on APIs, web scenarios, and the Timestream database in a cloud containerized environment. The volume tests helped baseline the performance and identify areas of concern. During the testing phase, we identified several performance bottlenecks, including bad gateway errors, high response times, and excessive costs associated with querying the Timestream database. By optimizing the database structure and fine-tuning system configurations, we observed substantial improvements in response times, scalability, and availability. Additionally, the database optimization led to a significant reduction in Timestream database usage costs.

IMPACT

As a result of our efforts, the client saw a 95% improvement in response times for their business-critical operations. Furthermore, they experienced a 90% reduction in the consumption costs associated with the Timestream database, making the system much more efficient and cost-effective.

AT A GLANCE

CHALLENGE

The client struggled with several issues in their IoT-based application, including high response times, expensive database queries, and performance bottlenecks. These challenges impacted the scalability and efficiency of their system, making it crucial to identify the root causes and optimize the infrastructure for better performance and cost efficiency.

IMPACT

Our solution led to a 95% improvement in response times for critical business operations, significantly enhancing the performance of the IoT application. Additionally, we achieved a 90% reduction in Timestream database costs by optimizing its structure and configuration. This resulted in a more efficient and cost-effective system overall.
